UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS SUBMITTED FOR PUBLICATION IN THE PERIODICAL PRZEGLĄD EPIDEMIOLOGICZNY


1. Obligatory requirements to be met before submitting of the manuscript for publication

This is a publication containing important parts of a previously published work. Readers of medical periodicals are entitled to believe that they read is original. If that is not so the article should be preceded by a clear statement that it is being republished and the reasons for republication should be precisely given. The position of the primary publication in the list of references should be given.

When submitting an article for publication the author is expected to state in written form that the article has not been submitted for printing and will not be submitted in anther periodical before its publication in the quarterly Przegląd Epidemiologiczny. The article is to be approved by the head of the laboratory or department signed by him/her.

Authors should observe the instruction concerning the character of articles preferred by the quarterly. Przegląd Epidemiologiczny publishes experimental, methodological, review, casuistic articles on the epidemiology of infectious and noninfectious diseases, their clinical and epidemiological features, on vaccines and vaccinations, public health and other similar fields of science.

Short communications on experimental articles and letters to the editor as part of discussion with authors or articles already published in the periodical are also accepted.

The articles should be prepared according to Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: New Engl J Med. 1997;336:309-15.

2. Instructions on Manuscript Preparation

2.1. The articles submitted for publication should be sent in duplicate typescripts in A4 format, typed on only one side of the paper,with 4 cm margin on the left side and double spaced (31 lines on a page). The pages should be numbered consecutively. It is recommended to enclose a copy of an article in electronic form on a disc. When sending the disc authors should be sure that the text on it is identical with that of the typescript and the file in named clearly. Disc in WORD (6.0 or 7.0 ) or WORD PERFECT are acceptable.

2.2. The title page of the text should carry consecutively: the rull name of the author (authors), the title, the name of the institution to which the work should be attributed, the initials of the first name(s) of the head of the institution, and the text of the article. In the text the following parts should be presented: Abstract, Introduction, Material and methods, Results (or Results and comments to them), Discussion, Conclusions, Summary, References. The consecutive parts of article should de given subtitles, if the article could be better perusable.

Abstract should be enclosed. They should not exceed 200 words (not more than 25 lines typed). Summary should recapitulate the facts conclusions of the study. Very briefly aim of work, basic methods and procedures, main observations and most important conclusions are to be presented. A summary should be preceded by the initial letter of author's (author's) Christian name and title.

Key words - 3-5 words - for the main topics of the paper.

Material and methods - Information is to be provided on the subject of the study, methods and reagents used in a sufficiently exhaustive way to enable readers to repeat the experiments or observations. The reagents and materials should be exactly described. For generally known methods references should be given together with methods of statistical analysis used in the study. In case of methods not generally known although already published brief descriptions should be added with references. In case of new or substantially modified methods detailed descriptions are to be added.

Results - They should de given in logical sequence in words, tables and figures. The data from the tables and figures should not be repeated in text, where only the most important observations are to be summarized.

Discussion - New or important aspects of the results of studies are to be stressed discussing their limitations. The results of own studies are to be compared against the background of references used by authors. Detailed data presented in the foregoing parts of the article should not be repeated.

Conclusions - They should be stated precisely in points or descriptively and should be logically related te the aims stated in the introduction. Statements and conclusions not derived from own observations should be avoided. Authors should avoid also statements on costs or advantages if their study contains no economic data and their analysis. If a hypothesisis proposed it must be stated clearly. Far-reaching conclusions should not be drawn from studies not yet completed.

References - Only references quoted in the next and related directly to the topic of the ostudy are acceptable (not more 20 references). They should be presented according to the order they appear in the text. It quoted in the text the reference number should be given in parentheses. References quoted in tables and legends for figures are to be included in the list. Summaries, non-published works and reports are not to be included. Studies accepted for publication but not yet published, should be designates "in press"; authors should obtain written consent for quoting it and confirmation that this studywas accepted for publication. Information from manuscripts sent to the editor but notaccepted should de quoted as "unpublished" in the text but not in list of references and only after having obtained of a written consent of the author. Quoting as "personal or own information" should be avoided, with the except for important information not accessible in published source. In such caces the name of the person and the date of information obtaining should be quoted in text. In the list of references the following sequence should be kept:

  1. author's name(s) and first letter of their christian names;
  2. full title of study;
  3. periodical title in accepted abbreviation (according to List Journals Indexed in Index Medicus);
  4. year;
  5. volume;
  6. number of the first and last pages of study.

In case of non-periodicals (e.g. books) the author's (authors') name as above should be given, followed by chapter's title in collective work, book title, editor's name, place of publication, publisher's name and year of publication and from-to pages of the chapter.

Tables - Tables should be typed or printed on separate sheets and numbered using Roman numbers. Numbering should correspond to the sequence of their appearance in the text.Tables should be provided with titles above. Every column in tables should have a brief heading and more extensive explanation should be given below table. In the explanations statistical variability should be precisely presented (standard deviation or standard error of the means). The number of tables should be reduced to indispensable for the documentation of results.

Figures - On the reverse of each figure author's name, article title, consecutive number of figure and up and down should be written. Figures should be drawn in black China ink on technical carbon paper in the size of future reproduction or larger, legends are to be written in technical lettering. Figures can be made by computer technique. Legends to figures are to be written on separate page. In the appropriate places in text consecutive numbers of figures or tables should be included in parentheses e.g. (Fig.1) or (Table I). The place for insertion of illustrative materials should be marked wirh pencil on manuscript margin.

Size of articles - Original scientific studies should not exceed 10 typescript pages, including tables, figures, reference and summary in English.Short communications cannot exceed 3 typescript pages prepared according to instructions for originals. Letters to Editor intended for publication cannot exceed 2 typescript pages and should contain author's full name and address of work place or place of residence.

General principles - The editorial board reserves for itself the right to correct stylistic errors and terminology and to make necessary text changes without author's knowledge. Articles non qualified for publication are not returned. Authors receive without payment 15 reprints. Editor reserves for himself the right to use some reprints for ads. Present address of institution of work should be enclosed with the manuscript. Phone, fax number and e-mail address are welcome also.
